Texas: medical director for a addiction medicine / mat clinic
Whether Texas requires a physician medical director for a addiction medicine / mat clinic, the qualifications, duties and the rule it comes from.
Qualifications
Licensed to practice medicine in Texas per 22 TAC Ch. 163, with a minimum of 2 years' experience in the field of addiction medicine (a facility that cannot secure this may seek a State Methadone Authority variance with a qualified medical consultant and training plan).
Duties the rule assigns
- prescribe narcotic drugs per federal standards
- evaluate patients and determine appropriate treatment modalities
- review treatment plans annually
- review and countersign treatment plans prepared by counselor interns
- decide take-home medication privileges
- conduct a face-to-face meeting with each patient no later than one week after admission
Notes
Applies specifically to narcotic (opioid) treatment programs/medication units (methadone/buprenorphine dispensing) under HHSC licensure — the core of a MAT clinic. Continuous on-site presence is not mandated by the rule text found.
