• Oversees all medical services provided by the opioid treatment program
• Ensures individuals meet admission criteria and receive required physical examination(s) and laboratory testing
• Prescribes methadone and other FDA-approved medications, with the individual's input, ensuring dosage is appropriate to the individual's needs
• Reviews and signs each individual's initial treatment plan, and reviews/updates it based on the individual's needs
• Coordinates care and consults with each individual's clinical treatment team on a regular basis
• Ensures the program's compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

May delegate specific responsibilities to authorized program physicians and healthcare professionals under the Medical Director's direct supervision. Applies to licensed Opioid Treatment Programs (methadone/OTP) under 9 CSR 30-3.132 — not to office-based buprenorphine prescribing outside an OTP, nor to Comprehensive Substance Treatment and Rehabilitation (CSTAR) programs generally (9 CSR 30-3.110), whose staffing rule allows a physician, psychiatrist, PA, or APRN in a collaborative arrangement rather than naming a medical director — confirm the program model.
